Physical Education

at Linthwaite Clough

Physical Education (PE) is where children discover the joy of movement, the thrill of teamwork and the satisfaction of pushing their personal boundaries – it's so much more than just running around!

At Linthwaite Clough, we believe every child can succeed in PE, whether they're naturally sporty or still finding their physical confidence, and our inclusive approach ensures everyone experiences the benefits of being active. Through our 'Beyond the Physical' curriculum, children master fundamental movement skills before applying them to exciting sports and activities, all while developing crucial life skills like cooperation, resilience and fair play. We're passionate about nurturing not just physical fitness but also mental wellbeing, helping your child build the foundations for a healthy, active lifestyle that will serve them well beyond their school years.

Read about how our PE curriculum is designed

  • At Linthwaite Clough we intend to offer a PE curriculum that forms an integral part of the school Curriculum - one that is inclusive and engages all pupils, in a supportive and challenging environment. Through the implementation of the 'Beyond the Physical’ scheme, we aspire for all children to acquire, develop and master their fundamental movement skills. We aim to further the children’s knowledge and understanding of Physical Education concepts and principles and to develop their overall competence, allowing them to enjoy (and excel in) a broad range of physical activity.

We offer a curriculum that provides the children with the learning opportunities which enable all children to succeed at their level; to enjoy their learning and to provide them with knowledge and skills for a lifelong love and participation in Physical Activity and Sport.

The holistic nature of the Beyond the Physical Scheme of Learning not only allows for children to succeed and master the physical skills associated with Physical Activity, but will teach the children through cognitive and social domains allowing them many opportunities to cooperate and collaborate effectively as part of a team and compete appropriately against each other, adhering to the principles of fairness, sportsmanship and respect.

As a school we understand the importance that Physical activity has on children’s general health, fitness and mental wellbeing. Beyond the Physical’s Scheme of Learning, alongside the wider opportunities provided in school, provides opportunities for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and will teach children the importance of leading healthy, active lives.

  • We use the Early Years Statutory Framework and the National Curriculum as a basis for our PE curriculum.  In order for us to implement the physical development areas of the EYFS Framework and National Curriculum objectives, we follow Beyond the Physical’s Scheme of Learning.

The Beyond the Physical Scheme of Learning has been adapted to allow us to deliver the content over a 2-year cycle, with a focus on teaching fundamental skills in EY, KS1 and LKS2 before applying these skills to specific sports in UKS2. The Scheme of Learning ensures that high-quality activities are delivered to ensure all children have success and master fundamental skills.  As there is such a focus on mastering fundamental skills, children within the 2/3 class will follow the units delivered in LKS2, where this is still the focus.

PE lessons are taught twice a week. Two units are delivered each half term. We split the units into three words which enable the learning to be divided into small steps. Each word links to specific skills. For example; Look, Run, Avoid focusses on team games and developing simple tactics for attacking and defending. In order to deliver these lessons, a broad range of equipment is used. When working on sport specific skills in UKS2, equipment specific to the sport is used. Where possible, cross-curricular links are made, ensuring they are meaningful and at the appropriate level for the phase the children are in, for example; developing scoring systems in team games.

PE is assessed ‘in the moment’. Children are assessed on each holistic aspect of a lesson – move, solve and connect.

In order to provide the children with wider opportunities to participate in team games and competitions, we are part of the Pennine Sports Partnership which provides a variety of inter and intra schools competitions and activities.

  • As a result of the PE curriculum at Linthwaite Clough, children have acquired, developed and mastered key fundamental skills, gained knowledge and understanding of key concepts and have been provided with opportunities that will foster a lifelong love and participation of Physical Activity.
